From: quark@cs.bu.edu (Paul Fu) Date: Wed, 16 Sep 92 22:53:15 -0400 Subject: Narnia: Conflict Resolution Conflict Guidelines for The Chronicles of Narnia Mush. No matter how placid and congenial an environment that is attempted, there will inevitably be conflict which arises. As is the nature of conflict, it invariably involves the element of power: that is, who has it, who doesn't, and who wants it. Within the bounds of mudding, there are several different variations on conflict which are open to arbitration and resolution. The participants: The Player - a non-wizard character. The Wizard - a character with the Wizard bit. The God - the character who serves as the game god, with ultimate and final power and authority. The conflicts: o Player vs. Player - the issue of player vs. player is one that is best resolved through the use of a small group comprised solely of three player Arbiters. This Player Council will be responsible for the hearing and arbitration of all player vs. player conflicts. In general, such will be limited to invasions of personal privacy or violations of NarniaMUSH codes of conduct and will not be related to the abuse of wizard powers. o Wizard vs. Wizard - the issue of wizard vs. wizard is one which will be resolved through a three member Wizard Council, all members of which are wizards. This council will be responsible for the hearing and arbitration of the violations of the wizard code of ethics. Penalties will be recommended to the God of NarniaMUSH and will allow for removal of Wizard bits. o Player vs. Wizard - the inherent nature of this conflict is based upon some abuse of power by a wizard detrimental to the player. As the most serious of the potential player-related conflicts, this will be resolved by a council of three players, three wizards, and the Magistrate of NarniaMUSH to resolve any tied voting. This Grand Council will be responsible for the hearing and arbitration of all claims of violations against the wizard code of ethics and the player code of ethics. Penalties will be decided by the entire Council, approved by the Magistrate and executed by the God of NarniaMUSH. These decisions are final and will not be subject to appeal. Sanctions may include removal of Wizard bit and in very extreme cases, removal from the game. In the instance of a Wizard bringing complaint against a Player, this complaint will be resolved under the Player vs Player guidelines. o Player or Wizard vs. God - this conflict will be resolved by the Grand Council. The Council will be responsible for hearing and arbitrating all claims of violations of codes of ethics. If the insult is pernurious enough, the god may be asked to step down from his position as god. Although all Council meetings will be closed, logs edited to remove private material will be made available after resolution of conflict. The role of the Councils is very important. Players who feel that they are able to impartially pass judgment upon infractions of Codes of Conduct are invited to contact the Magistrate. As always, it is the hope that such measures will not be necessary. However, as human nature is both whimsical and cruel, these provisions are provided for the resolution of any conflict in order that The Chronicles of Narnia MUSH is made an enjoyable game to be played.
